    The Wyandotte Early Reading First project will accelerate learning for 180 preschoolers  in Kansas City, Kan., by enhancing their language, literacy and pre-reading development.

    Wyandotte Early Reading First, a KU-backed early reading initiative in Kansas City, Kan., has secured a $3.4 million grant from the Department of Education.
• On October 7, 2004 Dr. Mary Abbott received the Dollar General National Tutor of the Year award at Pro-Literacy's International Convention in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Mary volunteers as a tutor, board member, and instructional literacy advisor to Literacy Kansas City which is a non-profit organization that matches volunteer tutors with adult learners who experience literacy challenges. Literacy KC is an accredited member of ProLiteracy America. This national organization represents 1,200 community-based volunteer and adult basic education affiliates in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
